CONSTRUCTION OF THE MAYAN RAILROAD

On February 11, 2019, Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced relevant updates related to the construction of one of the biggest infrastructure projects for his administration, the 1,525km (950-mile) Mayan Railroad, same that will link key tourism cities in the Yucatan peninsula such as Palenque and Cancún among others and expected to be completed in four years.

As per the latest announcement made, Tender calls to develop the first three sections are expected to be released within March and April 2019. Each section with an approximately cost of USD $1.1 billion.

The referred three first sections of the project will be:

  1. Palenque – Escárcega.
  2. Escárcega – Campeche.
  3. Campeche – Mérida.

The proposed scheme to develop the whole project, would be under Public – Private Partnerships in which awarded companies would not only be responsible of developing their awarded sections, but also for the maintenance of their sections for 30 years terms.

Tenders related to the additional 4 sections that comprise the project are expected to be released during 2019 – 2020.

The total investment for this project is estimated in USD $8.0 billion.

Three different types of trains are expected to serve once the project becomes operational, touristic, load and passengers.

With this project Mexican President seeks to promote and strengthen the development of the southeast Mexican region since such project would include the Mexican States of Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
